Where it all started...

Our story starts in the month of August 2017, on a livestock farm just outside of the town of Upington, in the Northern Cape province of South Africa on the banks of the majestic Orange River.

When a farmer and his son came across an advert in the local newspaper about an Indigenous Veld Goat auction, that would be held in town at the end of that month. Immediately falling in love with the photographs of these multi-colored goats, the web - browsing started to acquire as much information as possible, about these interesting and unique goats. Unfortunately, since so little is known about them, little information was available.

After many hours of searching for information, the farmer and his son learned that there are 4 official indigenous veld goat eco-types and one unofficial eco-type.

After numerous calls to the promoter of the Indigenous Veld Goats Association, they learned that only 3 of the 4 official eco - types would be on auction. Unfortunately, with less than 200 pure bred goats left of the forth eco - type in South Africa, none were available for the auction.

They had to attend.

Having a (fairly) successful auction, the farmer and his son proudly arrived back home with 7 Mbuzi goats (one of the 4 official eco-types) and a lot of newly found knowledge. At the auction they learned that more and more people are cross-breeding these Veld goats with other goats to obtain their hardy properties in their offspring.

Sadly, by only cross-breeding with the Veld goats, resulted in pure bred Veld goats becoming a rarity and lead to some of the eco - types almost going extinct.

Luckily, there are people like the farmer and his son who take pride in breeding pure animals and keeping them that way. And, by August 2018, they became the only people in South Africa to have all four of the official eco - types, as well as the unofficial Tankwa goats, of which there are less then 400 left worldwide, on one farm.

But, there was one thing that kept on bothering them. Since so little is known about the Veld goats and so few people farm with them purely, they kept on trying to figure out ways to raise awareness on a larger scale to preserve these beautiful and majestic animals. Unfortunately, all of their plans came to a dead end.

Until the farmers wife asked an all important question on a cold winters morning in the same calm, lovable voice she has done for so many years...

"Coffee anyone?"

At that exact moment, their son realized that was the solution to help raise awareness for these amazing goats.

Coffee.

A beverage loved by millions around the world and enjoyed everyday.

Since then, months of planning, numerous phone calls and many cups of coffee later, the farmer, his wife and their son all agreed on which coffees to use to kick off their awareness and goat saving campaign.

5 Goats Coffee Co. was born.

On the 1st of October 2018, the first 5 Goats Coffees where bagged and ready to be enjoyed.

From each 5 Goats Coffee Co. product sold, a certain percentage of the profits go towards the preservation and awareness campaign of these goats.

With 100% pure Arabica coffee beans from around the world, there's sure to be a coffee in the 5 Goats Coffee range that will suit your taste.
